Sapient House

Sapient House came about as a reaction to my personal desire for safe, supportive and affordable housing as well as the great and largely unsatisfied need that currently exists for other people in my position. Having lived and struggled with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity for over four years, I have had a truly difficult time finding stable accommodations. In my journey and travels I have met a diverse mix of extraordinary humans facing nearly impossible odds just to meet their own basic needs. Millions of Americans currently cope with some form of environmental illness, but there is a serious lack of resources for us. I am fortunate enough to be getting healthier all the time, due in large part to my grandparents who have taken me in until I can find a new home and my husband who works hard for the both of us. They are compassionate individuals who see how difficult this all is. Despite the hurdles we continue to jump, we are all optimistic that one day soon I will get to share a space with others like me and we will all get the unfortunately unique opportunity to thrive against all odds. I believe that we will have the most success as a community, so that is what I am building!

If you are interested in living together please fill out the form below and I will be in touch. We intend to move in somewhere between September and November, the sooner we put the right group together and find the space, the better! Please note that if you are not selected for this iteration of Sapient House, there will be more opportunities in the future as I intend to organize more houses going forward, specially for people with Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS) and other environmental illnesses.
On the Hunt for a Safer Rental
Finding a home that can accommodate a group of adults, some of whom have Multiple Chemical Sensitivities or other environmental illnesses has been a near impossible task since humans started falling ill with these conditions in the early 20th century. As many as 55 million* Americans are currently reporting being negatively impacted by chemicals, often found in building materials and fragranced consumer products, 22 million* of which have missed work or had to leave their jobs entirely due to exposure. The most important piece in any environmentally ill person's attempt to recover is having safe and sustainable accommodations. Unfortunately, various studies are showing that as many as 90% of of people who have MCS will experience homelessness at some point in their journey and at least 60%* are currently in need of safer shelter. I personally have had a very hard time finding places to live since I started experiencing MCS back in 2014 and I was even homeless for a time. I have worked with other canaries and allies to put together a list of qualities that make up a safer space. I hope that living in a home like this will help me recover from MCS once and for all.
